Moving away from the Gitga'at First Nation community can be a big change. Here are some tips on how to stay connected to Hartley Bay if you move out of the community.
Why People Move Away
Hartley Bay and several other First Nations communities are remote, which means members sometimes have to leave for other opportunities, including:
Going to college or university
Finding job prospects in other places
Moving to be closer to relatives who live elsewhere
Accessing healthcare services that are not readily available in community
Seeking improved infrastructure such as transportation, internet, and utilities
Why It's Important to Stay Connected
Staying connected to your community is essential.
Having relationships and a support system is crucial for everyone. Connection is the foundation of a community. Knowing that your family and friends are there for you, even from a distance, provides comfort.
Additionally, maintaining a strong sense of identity is important. Staying connected with the Gitga'at community helps you remember who you are and where you come from, which can be grounding when you're in a new and unfamiliar place.
Another reason to stay connected is to keep cultural practices and traditions alive. By staying involved, you ensure that Gitga'at traditions continue to be a part of your life.
How to Stay Connected
Here are some practical ways to stay connected with the Gitga'at community:
Use Technology
Social Media: Follow the Gitga'at First Nation account on Facebook.
Video Calls: Use apps like Zoom or FaceTime to have face-to-face conversations with family and friends.
Group Chats: Create group chats on WhatsApp or Messenger to keep in touch with multiple people at once.
Participate in Community Events
Online Events: Attend virtual community meetings and events. If you want to participate in any of the community events that do not have a virtual invitation, contact the Gitga'at administration office to see if we can arrange a virtual option.
Visits: If possible, plan regular visits back to the community for important events and gatherings.
Newsletters: Read Amhaw to stay informed about events, news, and community updates in Hartley Bay.
Get Involved from Afar
Volunteer: Offer to help with community projects remotely, such as fundraising or planning virtual meet-ups.
Support local businesses: Purchase goods from local artisans and businesses online.
Cultural practices: Continue to practice cultural traditions and teach them to others where you live.
The Importance of Staying Connected
In the end, whether you move away temporarily or for a longer time, staying connected with your community is part of who you are. Find ways to keep in touch, and remember that the Gitga'at community is always here for you.
Good idea, but off reserve need to feel included in the same teachings offered on reserve. It's time to have classes for cedar weaving, regalia making for off reserve etc. That will have the biggest impact. I'm hoping with hall renos, that opportunity will happen.
